That little airbag symbol on your dashboard is easy to ignore — but it’s one warning light you really shouldn’t. When it’s on, it usually means your airbag (SRS) system has detected a fault and disabled itself. In a crash, your airbags may not deploy.
Why the airbag light matters
Your SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) constantly checks its own components when you start the car. If it finds a problem, it switches the system off to avoid a dangerous accidental deployment — and warns you with the light. It will also cause your car to fail a pink-slip (eSafety) inspection.
Common causes of an airbag light
A worn clock spring
The clock spring is a coiled ribbon behind the steering wheel that keeps the driver’s airbag connected as you steer. It wears out over time, and it’s one of the most common causes of an SRS light.
Corroded or unplugged connectors
Airbag sensors and connectors live under the seats and around the cabin. Spilt drinks, water, or seat adjustments can disturb or corrode them, triggering a fault.
Seat-belt pretensioner faults
The pretensioners that tighten your seat belts in a crash are part of the SRS system. A fault here lights up the airbag warning too.
A low or recently disconnected battery
Sometimes a flat battery or a disconnect sets a code that stays on even after the power is restored — needing a proper scan and reset.
Stored crash data
If the car has been in an accident, the module may store a permanent fault that needs professional attention.
Why you shouldn’t just reset it
Clearing the light without fixing the fault leaves you driving a car whose airbags may not work. We never simply mask the warning — we read the SRS codes with manufacturer-level equipment, repair the actual fault, then clear the code so it stays off for the right reason.
