A dead battery is the single most common reason cars fail to start — and it almost always gives you warning signs first. Catching them early can save you a frustrating no-start in a Bondi car park. Here’s what to watch for.
1. Slow, laboured cranking
If your engine turns over more slowly than usual before it starts — that tell-tale rerr… rerr… rerr — your battery is struggling to deliver enough current. Cold mornings make it worse, so winter is when weak batteries finally give up.
2. The battery warning light
A glowing battery symbol on your dash doesn’t always mean the battery itself, but it does mean your charging system needs attention. It could be the battery, the alternator, or the wiring between them. This is worth a proper test rather than a guess.
3. Dim or flickering lights
Headlights that look dull at idle but brighten when you rev the engine are a classic sign of a battery or charging issue. The same goes for interior lights that flicker.
4. Electrical accessories acting up
Power windows moving slowly, an unreliable central locking, or infotainment that resets can all point to low voltage from a tired battery.
5. The battery is more than 3–5 years old
Most batteries last three to five years in Sydney’s climate. If you can’t remember the last time yours was replaced, it’s living on borrowed time.
6. A swollen or leaking battery case
Heat and overcharging can cause the battery case to bulge or leak. If yours looks misshapen, replace it promptly — and have the charging system checked, as overcharging may have caused it.
7. It keeps going flat overnight
If your battery is flat in the morning despite being fine the night before, you may have a parasitic drain — something staying powered when the car is off. This needs an auto electrician to trace.
